International Credit Union Day
International Credit Union Day 2026
Today is International Credit Union Day, and this year's theme, "Cooperative Finance: A Steady Signal in a Noisy World," perfectly reflects what we aim to be for our members every day.
When life feels uncertain and financial messages are coming from every direction, you can count on Comhar Linn INTO Credit Union to provide trusted guidance, stability and support. As a member-owned financial cooperative, our focus is always on helping our members achieve financial wellbeing, not profit.
We are proud to be your steady signal in a noisy world.
To celebrate International Credit Union Day, we've compiled some credit union facts.
- Your Credit Union, Your Voice
Every member is an owner. Every decision is made with members' financial wellbeing at its heart. That's the power of cooperative finance.
The Name 'Comhar Linn'
"Comhar Linn" translates as "working together", reflecting the cooperative values that underpin everything we do.
- A Community Built Around Education
From student teachers beginning their careers to retired teachers who have spent a lifetime shaping young minds, Comhar Linn brings together a unique nationwide community connected through education. Membership is open to members of the INTO, ASTI, RSTAI and RTAI unions, SNAs and school support staff, students in primary and post-primary education, and eligible family members. Today, more than 35,000 members trust Comhar Linn to support their financial wellbeing.
- It's Not About What You've Saved
One of the biggest myths about credit unions is that you can only borrow what you've saved. At Comhar Linn, loans are based on your ability to repay, not the balance in your savings account.
- Ready When You Are
Some credit unions require you to wait 13 weeks before borrowing, but not Comhar Linn. You can join and borrow on the same day.
- Financial Wellness
We regularly visit schools and educational settings, sharing practical tips on saving, budgeting and financial wellbeing. Helping members build healthy financial habits is just as important as providing loans.
- Great Place to Work
In 2026, Comhar Linn was named the 4th Best Small Workplace in Ireland by Great Place to Work Ireland. This recognition reflects our commitment to being an honest, people-led credit union, where supporting our team helps us provide exceptional support to our members.
- Ireland's Most Trusted Financial Sector
Credit unions have been ranked Ireland's most trusted organisation for customer experience for 11 consecutive years. At Comhar Linn, that trust is earned through personal service, real conversations and genuine support when members need it most.
- Rooted in Teaching
The Irish Credit Union Movement was founded in the 1950s by three visionary friends, including Nora Herlihy, a national schoolteacher from Ballydesmond, Co. Cork. At a time when leadership opportunities for women were limited, Nora helped build a movement that would go on to empower millions of people through financial cooperation.
- Historic Roots
Our office on 33 Parnell Square is an 18th-century Georgian townhouse that was occupied by notable figures such as Arthur Guinness Sr, Edward Newenham and Sir Archibald Acheson. In 1856, artist and stone carver James O'Shea used our office at 25 Wellington Quay to exhibit and sell a statue of the Immaculate Conception.
- Supporting Members of INTO | ASTI
Comhar Linn has been supporting members of the education community for decades, providing competitive loans, savings options and financial guidance through a people-first approach. As a member-owned financial cooperative, every decision we make is centred on improving the financial wellbeing of our members.
